I am a second year graduate student at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. I am in Game Design and Development Masters program. I did my undergraduate at RIT also in New Media Interactive Development. I actually did my undergraduate program in three years instead of four. I came in with credits from Advanced Placement courses in High School and when I found out I would graduate sometime early I decided to make it a full year. I overloaded my schedule several times to make it possible. It was a ton of work but well worth it.
I really love my code and I can design simple and clean interfaces. I like simple interfaces because then the content has to speak more then the interface. This also makes it easy for people to navigate. The average person does not have the attention span to fight with an interface that is overly complex. I also have a heavy art background. This can be easily seen in the artwork section. I have been drawing since before I can remember and coding since freshman year of high school.
I am a big gamer. I love to play video games, I love to make them. When I play games I look at them in a more technically sense then most. It drives my friends crazy when we are playing a game and I say something overly technical about the game that they do not understand. When I am with the people in the graduate program we generally dissect the games as we are playing and figure out how everything works. I enjoy knowing how they are made because I feel it gives me a greater appreciation of them. Most people just look at the graphics or if it is fun or not. They do not care how they made the graphics look the way they do or why the game is fun.
Making games gives me a greater sense of accomplishment because making something fun is not something everyone can do. The fun factor is something that cannot be defined and has no formula. Making a website or an application does not hold the same amount of challenge that developing a game does. Creating games takes an amount of creativity that is not present in everyone. The gaming industry is always moving forward and new things are being thought of. To keep up you have to be creative and a quick learner or you will be left behind. I believe I hold these qualities and will be able to make some fantastic games in the future.
