Original - Invasion Cute Level Concept
This is a concept art piece for Invasion Cute a game idea that was worked on over two quarters. This is how the same level would look "ugly" and "cute." See Invasion Cute Design Document in the Interactive section for my information on Invasion Cute.
Original - Falling with an Octopus
Layers: 168
In this piece I was playing with perspective. I put in lots of effort into the coloring, I have at least four shades for most colors. I also added in lots of detail to the clothing to make is more real. I wanted the falling girl and the guy trying to catch her as the focal point but I added many small details. I wanted the people to get intrigued enough to take a closer look and notice all of the fine details in the picture. For started there are the two people in the background that are also having their own catastrophe. These two, while much smaller, have the same amount of detail as the main two. The next thing to notice is the fact that she might be holding a fish bowl there is an octopus crawling out of it. To keep with the octopus theme, there is her bracelet, and the slippers that both the girl and guy trying to catch her are wearing. I also put a lot of detail into the floor. I wanted to make sure it looked like a wooden floor so I had to add many little crack and such to make it obvious. The fallen stool shows how everything started, it leaves you guessing as to how it is going to end.
Original - Angel
Layers: 14
This started as a doodle that I then finalized and decided to color. Since it is such a simple piece I wanted to keep the colors simply and on the pastel scale. I used a gradient for her hair that goes from blue to green to yellow. I used a black overlay with only 20% opacity to show the dark parts in her hair. I used solid white for the highlights in her hair to emphasizes them so they did not get lost in the picture. I used yellow for the shadow in her wings because it the last color in her hair and they connect nicely. Also, it keeps the color scheme nicely. I did not want to use more blue or a gray color so yellow was the best choice. I did not want hard lines between the edge of the shadow and the light. To fix that I did a blend between white the yellow and made the yellow fade to the white of the wing so the lines are not hard edged. I used the same shape of the yellow shadows and scaled it up and used the blend tool.
Fan art - Ryu from Street Fighter
Layers: 29
This is one of the most challenging pictures I have ever drawn. I do not usually draw guys and when I do they are not very muscular. Figuring out where the lines for the muscles should be and how I should show the depth in them was a big challenge. I used many stock photos for reference of shape of muscles and where the shadows and highlights should be. For the background I made a gradient so it would look somewhat light a sunset. I took this same layer and put it on top of all of the layers and put the opacity at 15%. This gave all the colors enough of a change to make him look in place while before it looked a little odd because his clothing was bright white when it should have been effected by the light.

Fan art - Domeki, Youko, Watanuki and Himawari from XXXHoLiC
Layers: 2
This is one of the few black and white only pieces I have that was meant to be black and white. I spent a lot of time figuring out where the black should be, how to show the shadows, and what should be all white. I also made ever character in a separate box that in top boy and bottom girl extends under the character next to them. While the image of the character does not continue the background does. I spent most of the time doing the backgrounds in the picture. In the top boy I used lines the cross at a forty-five degree angle that go from really then to thick. On the top girl and bottom boy I used small straight lines. On the bottom girl I used various sized dots to make a pattern.

Original - Fox girl
Layers: 20
I wanted to do something with very soft color to give the feel that she is floating around without much care. I used gray lines instead of my normal black and I made the line color around her eyes darker to make them stand out more. This was my first time doing water effects so showing that her hair is under water really made me have to think about where the lines would be in relation to the water. The lines are on two different layers. One is under the transparent water layer and one is on top. This allowed for the transparent water layer to go above some lines and give that underwater feel. I also added another water layer at the very bottom that is the same color as the water, but is at full opacity in order to give the water below her depth.
Fan art - Azuma from Yakitate!! Japan
Layers: 20
This is Azuma and he makes bread and has the legendary "solar hands." Since his hands are focused on in the series I decided to focus on them in this piece as well. In doing this, I was able to get a different perspective that I had not previously used. In order to put more focus on the character's hands I made the lines a lot thicker around his hands. I then cropped the picture to make it seem like it was almost in your face.

Original - Pumpkin Spirit for Halloween
Layers: 29
I created this picture for Halloween, hence the pumpkin head. I wanted to give this picture a different feel from the rest. All of the shadows and lights are done very differently from how I usually do it. Normally I make a separate layer for every color. Which would mean one for her clothing base color, one for her clothing shadow, et cetera. One this picture I made all the shadows black and made the transparency 50% and all the highlights white with opacity set to 50%. Which gave it much more of a gray feel. I then put an orange layer over the entire picture and set it's opacity to 10% to make the whole thing much more orange and give it a Halloween feel.
Original - Egg
Layers: 19
This is just a simple drawing of a cracked open egg. I was practicing with my vector version of real life objects. I used a brown egg because I liked the color better and I think it showed more depth. I put a lot of effort into the inside skin on the shell, it really makes it look like a real egg versus a plastic one.
Original - Strawberry
Layers: 14
I was really craving strawberries one day, because they are my favorite fruit. It was winter and there are no fresh strawberries available. So, I drew one instead. I had never really tried to do something realistic like this and it turned into an extra practice exercise.
